Whatever the case may be, the Cardigan and the Pembroke Welsh Corgis were interbred and considered the same breed up until 1934 when a show judge thought they were too different and separated them into two different breeds. "This is Heidi, my dog. She is a two-year-old Cardigan Welsh Corgi. When we wanted a dog, we all decided that it would be best to rescue a dog from the pound. My family decided to pick Heidi to see in one of those little fenced areas to see if we wanted to have her. We were in there for about a half hour and she didn't even want to look or have anything to do with us. But for some reason we were all very attached to her. When we decided to adopt her the employees at the pound were so relieved because she has had past aggression that they worked with a lot. After the first couple weeks she was with us she became so attached to us that if I left the house for five minutes she would start whimpering and wining as if she were crying. For the first nine to ten months Heidi did not like strangers at all. If anyone out of the family would come in to our house she would growl, bark and even try to lunge at them. She has never bitten anyone, even when someone puts their hand out for her to get a whiff she'll just keep on barking. After a lot of good stable routine and exercise and socializing with enough people she has become the sweetest dog ever. She even treats little kittens as if they were her own puppies and bathes them. After having Heidi as an addition in our house I wouldn't have chosen any other dog."The first Cardigan Welsh Corgi was seen in the United States in 1931, and four years later the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. Cardigans may not look like athletes, but they are agile. You’ll be amazed at how fast a Corgi can run when he’s chasing a ball or competing in agility trials. If he can twist out of the way of an angry cow, he can certainly navigate A-frames, tunnels, jumps, and other obstacles. The Cardi has lots of stamina — he can even scramble along hiking trails — but he’s also satisfied with a shorter walk or playtime in the yard. One of the many breed characteristics that distinguish Cardigans from Pembrokes is color. Cardigans come in more colors including blue merle and brindle which have never occurred in purebred Pembrokes. Since canine geneticists have proven that both of these traits are dominant, it is virtually impossible for either color to suddenly appear in a litter of Pembrokes. Blue merle or brindle Pembrokes are a result of crossbreeding which is not condoned by the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America or their members. These puppies are not purebred, are not eligible to be registered in the AKC Stud Book and cannot compete in AKC Conformation or Herding events.
The fun-loving Cardi is a classic herding dog: even-tempered, loyal, and affectionate. His true goal in life is to spend time — and please — his people. His moderate size and activity level makes him adaptable to any type of home or family, and he’s sturdy and tolerant of children and other pets. In fact, the company of another dog or a cat is a big bonus for him. The rest is routine care: Trim his nails every few weeks — you can also trim the hair on his feet for a neater look — and brush his teeth frequently for good overall health and fresh breath.

Some differences between the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is that the Pembroke's tail is often bobbed or cropped at birth. Cropping tails is illegal in a lot of countries, and even in countries where it is legal, a lot of people opt out of cutting of the tail leaving it natually long. Whereas the Cardigan natually has a long tail and cropping the tail is not accepted in the written standard. The Pembroke usually has straighter legs as it is not quite as long-bodied as a Cardigan; the Pembroke's head is generally more wedge-shaped; the ears are smaller and closer together than the Cardigan’s; also the Pembroke tends to be lighter than the Cardigan.
