Other surviving Enterprise artifacts include: the ship's bell, which resides at the U.S. Naval Academy, where it is traditionally rung only after midshipmen victories over West Point; the sixteen foot, one-ton nameplate from the ship's stern, which sits near a Little League park in River Vale, New Jersey; and one of the anchors, which is on display at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. Various other artifacts and mementos (including one of her portholes) are also kept aboard the current USS Enterprise. These studies concluded that speed and torpedo protection were of significant importance and that a large air group was necessary as it provided greater operational flexibility. They also found that carriers utilizing islands had enhanced control over their air groups, were better able to clear exhaust smoke, and could direct their defensive armament more effectively. Testing at sea also found that larger carriers were more capable of operating in difficult weather conditions than smaller vessels such as Ranger. Though the US Navy originally preferred a design displacing around 27,000 tons, due to the restrictions imposed by the Washington Naval Treaty, it instead was forced to choose one that provided the desired characteristics but only weighed approximately 20,000 tons. Carrying an air group of around 90 aircraft, this design offered a maximum speed 32.5 knots.

This was the historical World War II Yorktown-class aircraft carrier Enterprise, after which Gene Roddenberry named his fictional starship, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). (The Making of Star Trek, p. 164) World War II veteran Roddenberry emphatically reaffirmed this himself in a later 1973 radio interview (approximately 9 minutes into the interview) regarding the renaming of his originally intended SS Yorktown to Enterprise, by stating that he was, "(..)particularly fascinated by the story of the Enterprise in WWII which had Midway really turn the tide of the whole war. And I always considered it a heroic ship, and decided to use the name." Like its fictional counterpart, the historical Enterprise has become one of history's most celebrated vessels, being out of four carriers the only class survivor, and becoming the most decorated American vessel to serve in World War II, according to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 245). The originally intended SS Yorktown incidentally was named after the historical USS Yorktown (CV-5), the class vessel and thus one of Enterprise's class sisters; unlike Enterprise however, she was lost in the Battle of Midway.
